Valerie Smothers is the director of the Office of the Data Trust for Johns Hopkins Medicine. She provides leadership in the development of data and AI governance policies, processes, and infrastructure for use across Johns Hopkins Medicine and coordinates across seven data trust analytic teams and approximately 400 data analysts. Working with faculty and operational leaders, she manages processes to review the use of Johns Hopkins Medicine data for research, quality improvement, and operational AI implementation, and serves as the point person for data governance operations and business intelligence workforce issues.

Smothers previously served as the deputy director for MedBiquitous, where she worked with universities, professional organizations, government agencies, and industry partners to develop technology standards to advance the health professions.
