Nicholas Durr is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University, with appointments in the electrical and computer engineering, ophthalmology, the Center for Bioengineering Innovation & Design and the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare.
Durr also directs the Computational Biophotonics Lab at Hopkins. His research group focuses on creating and translating new technologies at the intersection of optics, machine learning, and medical devices; his team works on a wide range of applications, including non-invasive blood analysis, image-guided surgery, computational endoscopy, slide-free pathology, biofluid analysis, ocular imaging, cryotherapy, and point-of-care diagnostics. Durr’s work has been recognized with an NSF CAREER Award, an NIH Trailblazer Award, and a SPIE Prism Award.
He received a BS in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley in 2003 and a PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010. He was an M+Visión Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2011 to 2014. In 2013, Durr co-founded an ophthalmic medical device startup called PlenOptika, where he worked as CEO until he joined Hopkins in 2016.
