The Malone Center and the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute introduced a new joint seed grant initiative to support collaborative research projects between Wilmer and Malone faculty.  Two to three grants of up to $50,000 each will fund research projects that apply engineering solutions to address ophthalmology-related problems.

Seed grant applications are due May 25. Details on the initiative can be found here: https://malonecenter.jhu.edu/seed-grant/

The announcement capped a Feb. 20 gathering at Wilmer Eye Institute on the East Baltimore campus, where researchers from both institutions discussed current research on robotic assistants for retinal surgery, AI-aided diagnosis of degenerative eye conditions like glaucoma, and new approaches to surgical education for ophthalmologists.

Opening the event in the photo above is Peter J. McDonnell, M.D., director and William Holland Wilmer Professor of Ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Presenters included ophthalmologists Shameema Sikder and Tin Yan Alvin Liu, and engineers Iulian Iordachita, Mathias Unberath, and Phillippe Burlina.
