Archana Venkataraman, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was installed as the John C. Malone Assistant Professor in a ceremony on Friday afternoon.

Venkataraman directs the Neural Systems Analysis Laboratory and is affiliated with the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare. Her research lies at the intersection of multimodal integration, network modeling, and clinical neuroscience. Her goal is to develop a comprehensive and system-level understanding of the brain by strategically combining analytical tools, such as matrix factorization, signal processing, and probabilistic interference, with application-driven hypotheses. This approach promises to yield novel insights into debilitating neurological disorders, with the long-term goal of improving patient care.

Venkataraman received her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006, 2007, and 2012, respectively. She was awarded the NIH Advanced Multimodal Neuroimaging Training Grant in 2011, the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship in 2007, the Siebel Scholarship in 2007, and the MIT Provost Presidential Fellowship in 2006.

The John C. Malone Assistant Professorship is named for John C. Malone, MS ’64, PhD ’69. Malone is widely recognized as a pioneer in communications and media. He has been generous in support of Johns Hopkins University, including a gift for the construction and naming of Malone Hall. Malone has long believed in the promise of improving health care through the integration of engineering technologies with medical advances and has made a commitment to providing endowed professorships to faculty members who are improving health care using a systems-based approach.
