Paul Yi, director of University of Maryland Intelligent Imaging (UMII) Center and affiliate faculty at the Malone Center, was recently quoted in a WIRED article titled “These Algorithms Look at X-Rays—and Somehow Detect Your Race.”
Yi commented on an Emory University study showing machine learning algorithms can detect race in medical images. The results have spurred new concerns that AI software can amplify inequality in health care, where studies show Black patients and other marginalized racial groups often receive inferior care compared to wealthy or white people.
