Mathias Unberath, assistant professor of computer science and head of the Advanced Robotics and Computationally AugmenteD Environments Lab, has been named a recipient of Google’s Research Scholar Program, which funds world-class research conducted by early-career professors at institutions around the world.
A core faculty member in the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare and the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics, Unberath works to advance healthcare by creating collaborative intelligent systems that support clinical workflows. Through synergistic research on imaging, computer vision, machine learning, and interaction design, he builds human-centered solutions that are embodied in emerging technology, such as mixed reality and robotics. He has published more than 100 journal and conference articles and has received numerous other awards, grants, and fellowships, including a recent National Science Foundation Early CAREER Award.
Unberath’s one-year Google Research Scholar Award in health research, “Assuring Image-Based Surgical Autonomy with Human-in-the-Loop Designs,” will advance current understanding of user assessments of image-based surgical navigation systems to more safely capitalize on these systems’ benefits.
