Congratulations to Kevin Olds, Omar Ahmad (MCEH faculty), John Krakauer (MCEH faculty) and Promit Roy for winning the BioMaryland Life Startup Award for their “Max & Halley” startup at the 2016 INNOVATION SHOWCASE! The Johns Hopkins Alliance for Science and Technology Development & University of Maryland, Baltimore’s signature commercialization event is held annually and strives to increase the number of technologies spun out of the two universities and expedite their entry into the marketplace through exposure to, and mentorship from, high level executives and investors.

AWARDED PRIZES IN 2016:
2 Abell Foundation Awards – Faculty ($50K each)
2 Academic Awards – Faculty ($25K each)
2 BioMaryland Life Prize Awards – Start-Up ($25K each)

The two startup prizes, presented by the Maryland Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Ben Wu, went to: Max and Haley, a spinout of Hopkins Technology Ventures, developing fully integrated hardware, software and treatment protocol solutions for neurological rehabilitation; and Paitagen, LLC, a UMB spinout developing fast, accurate and inexpensive tests to detect bacteria and fungi.

The two Academic Prizes went to researchers Bob Ernst for his research on Anti-Sepsis Lipid A-based (ASLA) Therapeutics, and Aaron Chang who is developing a system for prevention of acute kidney injury called Renalert.

This year’s winners of the Abell Foundation awards are UMB inventor Erimy Polf who created the 3D Gamma Imaging System for Medical Applications; and John Murphy and William Bishai who are developing of a Second-Generation, Improving Ontak for cancer immunotherapy at Johns Hopkins.
