Jeremy Brown, a new faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was installed as the John C. Malone Assistant Professor in a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.
Brown’s research focuses on the interface between humans and robotics, with a specific interest in medical applications and haptic feedback. He seeks to develop novel haptic interfaces to upper-limb prosthetics and minimally-invasive surgical robotics.
Brown joined the Whiting School as an assistant professor in January 2017. He is a graduate of the Atlanta University Center’s Dual Degree Engineering Program, earning BS degrees in Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering from Morehouse College and the University of Michigan. Brown obtained his MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. After completing his PhD, he joined the Haptics Research Group at the University of Pennsylvania as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
Brown is the recipient of several awards, including the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Best Student Paper Award at the 2012 IEEE Haptics Symposium, and the Penn Postdoctoral Fellowship for Academic Diversity.
The John C. Malone Assistant Professorship is named for John C. Malone, MS ’64, PhD ’69. Malone is widely recognized as a pioneer in communications and media. He has been generous in support of Johns Hopkins University, including a gift for the construction and naming of Malone Hall. Malone has long believed in the promise of improving health care through the integration of engineering technologies with medical advances and has made a commitment to providing endowed professorships to faculty members who are improving health care using a systems-based approach.
