Artificial intelligence (AI) is igniting conversation everywhere – from academic conferences to boardrooms, and even the halls of Congress. Health care is universally seen as a (perhaps the) application where AI stands to have a dramatic impact. While AI offers tremendous promise, the reality is that moving AI from the bench to the bedside – developing an algorithm, then deploying it in a real healthcare setting – requires many steps and many hands.
The Malone Center is uniquely poised to accelerate the translation of AI advances into healthcare. We have world-leading faculty who are advancing the fundamentals of the field, working alongside world-leading clinicians who can ground these advances in significant applications. I like to call our strategy “inside-out” AI – meaning we start by understanding the needs and opportunities in the healthcare space, then charge toward solutions that can be deployed to solve those problems. This strategy not only leads to a higher probability of a true success story – AI improving patient care – but also provides a unique flavor of work, only possible at a place like Johns Hopkins.
