John C. Malone Professor of Computer Science Suchi Saria was recently featured in a WebMD video on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. In the video, Saria explains the basics of AI and why AI applications can be useful for healthcare providers.

Saria’s work centers on developing new AI tools for diagnostic and treatment planning—tools that use statistical machine-learning techniques to tease out subtle information from “messy” observational datasets, and provide reliable inferences for individualizing care decisions. For instance, algorithms that she created are being used today in hospitals to predict with startling accuracy which patients will succumb to deadly sepsis.
